DFI Educational Trust Plans Gala Fundraiser
The Deep Foundations Institute Educational Trust will hold its second annual gala fundraising dinner Nov. 6 at The Museum Club at Bridgewaters in New York City. Special guest speaker is James Duncan, university distinguished professor emeritus, and associate director of the Center for Geotechnical Practice and Research for the department of civil and environmental engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
The Deep Foundations Institute Educational Trust focuses on instilling an interest in the heavy construction and civil engineering sciences in high school and college-level students. Funds raised are used to provide scholarships to Master’s-level students in a deep foundations-directed area of study.
Reservations for the black-tie-optional affair are $350 (tax deductible contribution), and sponsorships also are available. For more details, telephone 973-423-4030, or e-mail staff@dfi.org.
Foundation Drilling Seminars
ADSC, the International Association of Foundation Drilling, is putting on educational programs on both coasts in November.
An anchored earth retention seminar takes place Nov. 8-9, at the Sheraton Park Resort in Anaheim, Calif. Topics to be covered include anchored micropile walls for slope stabilization, deep tieback anchor installations, equipment and tooling, various case histories, history of earth retention and hollow-bar installations. Also on hand will be exhibits featuring the very latest in anchored earth retention technologies and equipment available in today’s market. To register, or for more information, telephone 214-343-2091, or visit
www.adsc-iafd.com (click on “events).
On the other side of the country, ADSC’s New England chapter is presenting a drilled shaft seminar and exhibit titled, “Quality Assurance-Quality Control Emphasizing: Remediation Techniques,” at the Wyndham Garden Hotel at LaGuardia Airport in New York on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Presented by 10 of the nation’s top design, construction and testing practitioners, this one-day seminar offers an entire spectrum of drilled shaft design, specifications, quality control testing, and recommended construction procedures.
For further details on this seminar, telephone 718-353-9616.

Anderson Drilling Delivers for Trump
With much anticipation and several boardroom meetings, Anderson Drilling Corp. (Lakeside, Calif.) and Perini Building Co. (Las Vegas) successfully negotiated the drilled shaft foundation package for Trump International Hotel & Tower Las Vegas. The 64-story tower located on Las Vegas Boulevard behind the New Frontier is Donald Trump’s first Las Vegas project. The $300 million project features 1,282 luxurious condominium hotel units. When completed, the tower will stand 640 feet tall, making it the tallest residential structure in Las Vegas.
Anderson Drilling was contracted to excavate 294 drilled shaft foundations designed to support the high-rise tower and adjacent low-rise parking garage. The 1-meter diameter drilled shafts ranging from 35 feet to 70 feet deep were advanced using a vast array of rock tools. The work site was typical of recent Las Vegas strip developments, relatively small and congested with multiple large drill rigs, cranes and assorted support and earth moving equipment. The site layout was further complicated as the tower core section was situated approximately 15 feet lower in elevation than the perimeter of the site. A tough, thick caliche layer that was encountered
approximately 15 feet to 35 feet below the drill pad elevation challenged both Anderson Drilling and Perini, but the challenge was met and the building is scheduled to open early next year.
Anderson Drilling has more than 50 years of experience in the excavation and installation of drilled shafts throughout the United States. The company’s depth of experience is complemented by innovative and versatile equipment capabilities that enable it to provide several different types of drilled shaft foundation support elements, including cast-in-drilled-hole piles, auger-cast-in-place piles and micropiles. Anderson also is expert in earth retention systems, large-diameter access shafts, and contaminated soil removal.

Tie-back Attachment
Why buy a dedicated tie-back rig when you can get a tie-back attachment for an existing excavator that can handle all your tie-back jobs and save you money in the process? That's the question Bay Shore Systems would like to ask drilling contractors and other excavator owners.
“Because the tieback attachment is excavator-based, contractors can get extended use from a retiring or idle excavator, and spend less on the attachment,” explains Bay Shore president Herb Minatre. “The cost savings over a dedicated tie-back rig are substantial, and there is no sacrifice in functionality. It's a win-win situation for contractors.”
In addition, the tie-back attachment features full-function controls placed conveniently in the cab. Operators can run the full spectrum of tie-back functions from the comfort of the excavator cab instead of outside. This also keeps the operator safe from any debris that might come out of the hole, which greatly reduces operator fatigue and increases productivity.
The attachment also offers flexibility in drilling positions. Because it can take full advantage of the excavator's reach and position capabilities, the attachment can drill into high berms, sidewalls and other difficult environments.
”The Bay Shore design and manufacturing team can build a tie-back attachment to fit your excavator and your drilling requirements," says Minatre. “We can specifically match the attachment to your drilling environment so you can have a tool designed for your success.”
Since 1978, Bay Shore Systems has specialized in the manufacture of drilling equipment for challenging site conditions. Learn more at www.bayshoresystems.com
