Pesticides Persist
In Ground Water

Numerous studies over the past four decades have established that pesticides can move downward to reach the water table at detectable concentrations. A recent study found that the pesticides detected most frequently in shallow ground-water samples were predominantly from two classes of herbicides.

Volcanic Rocks Offer Repository for Greenhouse Gas
Scientists have used deep ocean-floor drilling and experiments to show that volcanic rocks off the West Coast and elsewhere might be used to capture huge amounts of globe-warming carbon dioxide produced from power plants or other sources.

Temporary Fees for Water Wells Proposed

According to a recent article in the Wise County Messenger , four Texas counties may start charging fees for wells that pump large volumes of water. The board of directors for the Upper Trinity Groundwater Conservation District is considering a temporary usage fee of $0.17 to $0.22 per thousand gallons used. However, board members would like to exempt domestic and livestock wells if they are located on fewer than 10 acres and produce less than 25 gpm, or 36,000 gpd.

Rig for Small- to Medium-sized Sites

The 400 series from Strike Manufacturing is designed for small- to medium-sized sites and minimum disturbance. Typically, this rig is mounted on tracks or comes truck-mounted, but it can be skid-mounted for remote areas. This rig, depending on the power package, will drill in excess of 3,000-foot boreholes. In trials, this rig has drilled 1,500-foot air rotary and 1,600-foot core holes. Mounted on a tracked under-carriage, this rig is suitable for exploration drilling. When this rig is mounted on a two- or four-wheel drive truck, it's ready for geothermal drilling, but also can double as an exploration drill if the access is reasonable.
