RMC Consultants Inc., Lakewood, Colo., just outside of Denver, was contracted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to decommission monitoring wells. The nearly 20-year-old firm conducted the monitoring well closure activities at the former Atlas "E" Missile Site 9 located in Hereford, Colo. The primary purpose of this investigation was to purge and sample five existing ground water monitoring wells to confirm that ground water impacts are below regulatory standards, and perform subsequent well decommissioning activities.
Site 9 is located approximately 6 miles southeast of Hereford, Colo. in northern Weld County. The original site consisted of 16.82 acres fee and easements, which were part of 245.6 acres of land that was acquired by purchase or condemnation between 1959 and 1961. The site was one of nine Atlas "E" missile sites operated by the U.S. Air Force under the 549th Strategic Missile Squadron at F.E. Warren AFB, Cheyenne, Wyo.
The firm was contracted to perform low-flow purging and sampling of five monitoring wells, provide an assessment of data validity and comparison of analytical results to regulatory standards, perform well-decommissioning activities, and manage the investigation-derived wastes. In addition, RMC prepared a final report for USACE review and approval.
In accordance with USACE requirements, all project objectives were achieved, and as such RMC recommended no further action at Missile Site 9.

Vermeer Corp. has expanded its line of NAVIGATOR horizontal directional drills with the introduction of three maxi-sized drill rigs, D500x500, D750x900 and D1000x900, designed specifically for large-diameter pipe installations. The units feature pullback forces of 500,000 pounds, 750,000 pounds and 1,000,000 pounds. The drills are built upon the Horizontal Rig & Equipment (HRE) design recently acquired by Vermeer. The design eliminates the number of drive components, including high-speed motors and reduction gearboxes. High-torque, low-speed hydraulic motors power the rotary and carriage drives. On the rotary drive, a single through-shaft motor turns the drill string and downhole
tooling. To help reduce wear and tear on the motor, the thrust box is equipped to include a large bearing pack assembly to absorb the axial load caused by thrust and pullback.
