Project Profile

Horizontal Directional Drilling for Massive
Municipal Water Improvement Project

A massive water infrastructure overhaul currently taking place in the Indiana city of Martinsville is using horizontal directional drilling and CertainTeed Certa-Lok C900/RJ PVC pipe to minimize disruption to residential areas and farmland. The 21,000-foot project involves replacing old cast iron potable water pipes, and connecting the community's rural homes with the City of Martinsville water supply. Contractor Infrastructure Systems Inc., Orleans, Ind., was hired to install the pipe. With a crew of four and a Vermeer 33x44 directional drill, ISI began work in April, and the job is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

Industry News

Pesticide Concentrations Are Decreasing

A new USGS study shows encouraging results in evaluating ground water contaminants. The widespread use of pesticides across the United States has been in practice for decades, with little knowledge of the long-term effects on the nation's ground water. The results of a new study indicate that samples taken from more than 300 wells across the United States have not retained a high concentration of pesticide contamination.

Conclusive Vote on Cause of Mud Volcano
Lusi started to erupt in East Java, Indonesia, on May 29, 2006, and still is spewing huge volumes of boiling mud over the surrounding area. In a resounding international vote, scientists have concluded that the mud volcano was triggered by the drilling of a nearby gas exploration well.

Troops Provide Filtered Water to Flood Victims
U.S. troops in Honduras recently helped provide clean drinking to local communities hit by a devastating tropical storm. Not only were homes ruined, but well water supplies also were contaminated by the floodwaters. Service members recently completed a water filtration project, where, in just a few days time, the team was able to transform more than 2,500 gallons of undrinkable water.

Water Table Depth
Tied to Droughts

Will there be another Dust Bowl in the Great Plains similar to the one that swept the region in the 1930s? It depends on water storage underground. Ground water depth has a significant effect on whether the Great Plains will have a drought or bountiful year.

New AWWA Report
Source water supply and protection emerged as the top area of concern among North American water professionals in the 2008 "State of the Industry Report," published by the American Water Works Association.

New Crawler Rig

Atlas Copco's Mustang, designed for flexibility, is suitable for applications where space is restricted, from construction jobs to geotechnical or geothermal projects. The Mustang 4-F1 is a new crawler version with higher ground clearance. It is compact for residential and tight industrial applications to drill 4-inch to 6-inch holes, 300 feet deep. It works ideally with Symmetrix for casing advance and extraction; down-the-hole drilling packages can be used with all COP, QL and TD hammers. Components also have been modernized, and quality and safety standards have been upgraded. Other changes include new rotation units, new rod holder and breaker, a newly designed feed cradle assembly, new winches and more.

For more information on the unit, visit www.atlascopco.us.
