Building a Telescope at the South Pole - Drilling into Ice
Researchers are working to build the world's largest neutrino telescope in the Antarctic ice, far beneath the continent's snow-covered surface. Dubbed "IceCube," the telescope will occupy a cubic kilometer of Antarctica when it is completed in 2011. Rather than a giant lens aimed at the heavens, the IceCube telescope consists of kilometer-long strings of 60 optical detectors frozen more than a mile deep in the Antarctic ice, and drilling for the project is a 24/7 operation.

Accolades for Aquifer Remediation Project
The Department of the Interior recently honored a team of scientists and collaborators for developing and implementing a remediation plan for a contaminated aquifer in northeastern Montana, which supplies water to nearly 3,000 residents of Poplar in the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.

Partnership Receives Grant for Carbon Sequestration
The DOE has awarded $66.9 million to the Big Sky Carbon Sequestration Partnership to fund a project that will inject a million tons of carbon dioxide into the sandstone rock layer beneath southwestern Wyoming. The 8-year carbon sequestration study will spend the first 2 years building infrastructure and drilling an 11,000-foot well into the sandstone rock layer west of Big Piney, Wyo.

EuroMARC Ocean Drilling Program
Scientific marine drilling and coring can shed light on both the deep and shallow sub-seafloors to advance our knowledge in the Earth and environmental sciences.

ITT Completes First Rural Drinking
Water Safety Project in China

ITT Corp. has completed two new rural water treatment plants in China, as part of a pilot project to tackle the country's rural drinking water issues. The two plants, which utilize leading water-treatment technology, will supply more than 10,000 local residents with purified water that meets or surpasses the national standards.undefined

Geothermal Electricity for Kenya's Rift Valley
In East Africa's Rift Valley,
project testing of advanced seismic and drilling techniques has been completed, and has exceeded all expectations. Wells of steam, able to generate 4 MW to 5 MW of electricity, and one yielding a bumper amount of 8MW, have been hit using the new technology.

New Ultra-high-pressure Pumps to Help Increase Oilfield Capacity

Flowserve Corp. , a leading provider of flow control products and services, has announced the successful start-up of what the company believes to be the highest-pressure deep-water injection centrifugal pumps in operation worldwide.

At Shell Oil Co.'s Ursa/Princess Waterflood project in the Gulf of Mexico, the pumps will inject high-pressure water into the sea bottom field to force out otherwise unrecoverable oil.

The project is expected to extend the life of the applicable Gulf of Mexico field by 10 years.
