IODP to Operate Three Drilling Platforms in 2009
The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program will conduct scientific ocean drilling operations aboard all three of its platforms in 2009, from March until December. It marks the first time since IODP began operations in 2004 that all three platforms will operate at the same time.

Scientists Study Sediment Grains in the Unsaturated Zone
USGS scientists are studying the microscopic mineral layer of tiny sediment grains and finding that the composition of these coatings on sediment grains in the unsaturated zone can have a substantial effect on the retention of nitrate and sulfate.

Enhanced Geothermal Energy Using Modern Research Methods
In Italy, a team of scientists has localized geothermal reservoirs that offer an energy potential comparable to that of 1,000 wind power plants.

Jordan's Ground Water Has High Radiation Levels
Ancient ground water being tapped by Jordan, one of the 10 most water-deprived nations in the world, has been found to contain 20 times the radiation considered safe for drinking water.

Satellites Reveal New Oil Finds
A new map of the Earth's gravitational force based on satellite measurements may make it easier to find new oil deposits.
