New Solutions for the Arsenic-poisoning Crisis in Asia
Every day, more than 140 million people in southern Asia drink ground water contaminated with arsenic. More than 15 years ago, scientists pinpointed the source of the contamination in the Himalaya Mountains, where sediments containing naturally occurring arsenic were |

carried downstream to heavily populated river basins below. But one mystery remained: Instead of remaining chemically trapped in the river sediments, arsenic somehow was working its way into the ground water more than 100 feet below the surface. After an extensive field study, today the research team appears to have solved the arsenic mystery, and is working with officials to prevent the health crisis from escalating.

Drill Cores Present New Evidence of Climate Change
The research is based on investigations by a 56-member team of scientists conducted on a 4,100-foot-long sedimentary rock core taken from beneath the sea floor under Antarctica's Ross Ice Shelf. |

Mission to Explore Buried Ancient Antarctic Lake
To explore one of the planet's last great frontiers - an ancient lake hidden deep beneath Antarctica's ice sheet - scientists will drill through 1.86 miles of ice to reach the lake, which may have been isolated for hundreds of thousands of years.

Geologists Map Rocks to Capture CO2
Scientists are exploring ways to pull carbon dioxide from the air and safely lock it away. In a new report, geologists have mapped large rock formations in the United States that can absorb CO2, which they say might be artificially harnessed to do the task at a vastly increased pace.

Simple Filter Delivers Clean Drinking Water
As an efficient, low-tech way to treat contaminated water, Dr. James Amburgey's research could bring clean, safe drinking water to potentially millions of people. Simplicity is the primary objective of the rapid sand-filter system he is developing.

Water Quality of Potential Concern in Private Wells
More than 20 percent of private domestic water wells sampled nationwide contain at least one contaminant at levels of potential health concern, according to a recent study. |

Coring Rock Layers Billions of Years Old
Red jasper, cored from layers 3.46 billion years old, suggests that not only did the oceans contain abundant oxygen then, but that the atmosphere was as oxygen-rich as it is today. To obtain unexposed samples, researchers drilled diagonally into the base of a hill in the Pilbara Craton in Western Australia.
