Scientists Return fromSiberian Drilling Expedition A
team of scientists from the United States, Germany, Russia and Austria
has just returned from a 6-month drilling expedition to a frozen lake
in Siberia: Lake El'gygytgyn, which was created 3.6 million years ago
when a meteor hit Earth and formed an 11-mile wide crater.

There, from
three holes drilled under the frozen lake, the researchers collected
the longest sediment core samples retrieved in the Arctic region,
recovering a total of 1,165 feet of sediments. The sediment record
collected extends back roughly 2 million years.
C&J Geothermal Participates in an Extreme Makeover C&J Geothermal assisted with implementing the energy-saving geothermal heating and cooling system installed in the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition project in Indianapolis.
Significant Gas Resource Discovered in U.S. Gulf of Mexico The U.S. Gulf of Mexico contains very thick and concentrated gas-hydrate-bearing reservoir rocks, which have the potential to produce gas using current technology. Recent drilling confirms that the Gulf of Mexico is the first offshore area in the United States with enough information to identify gas hydrate energy resource targets with potential for gas production.
The Green Technology of Home The Cliffs Cottage at Furman University has all the latest technological innovations in sustainable living -- geothermal heating and cooling, two solar technologies, even cisterns that collect rainwater from the roof. Energy-efficient, it can be heated and cooled for less than $75 a month.
New Guidance Recommends Testing Well Water for Children's Health Private well water should be tested yearly, and in some cases more often, according to new guidance offered by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The recommendations call for annual well testing, especially for nitrates and microorganisms such as coliform bacteria.
Typhoons Trigger Slow Earthquakes Scientists have found that typhoons trigger slow earthquakes, at least in eastern Taiwan. Three sensitive borehole strainmeters, installed 650 feet to 870 feet deep, detected otherwise imperceptible movements and distortions of rock. During the 5-year study period, the researchers identified 20 slow earthquakes, but they did not detect any slow events during the typhoon-free season.

The Cobra water pump pliers from KNIPEX-Werk are adjusted directly on a workpiece - simply by pushing a button, helping make work on nuts, bolts and pipes quicker and more comfortable. KNIPEX now offers a revised Cobra in a 10-inch length. No changes have been made to the push-button adjustment technology, but the capacity has been increased. The Cobra now can grip pipes and nuts up to 2 inches, and the optimized fine adjustment now has 25 pre-set locations. The push-button adjustment helps prevent unintentional shifting, and the pliers are self-locking on pipes and nuts.

FORMULAS AND CALCULATIONS FOR DRILLING, PRODUCTION AND WORKOVER
-- $120.75
Separate chapters deal with calculations for drilling fluids, pressure control, and engineering (Examples provided). Virtually all the mathematics required out on the drilling rig is here in one convenient source, including formulas for pressure gradient, specific gravity, pump output, annular velocity, buoyancy factor, volume and stroke, slug weight, drill string design, cementing, depth of washout, bulk density of cuttings, and stuck pipe.
