Project Profile

BTrenchless Completes Two Tunnels for Reservoir Project
BTrenchless, a division of BT Construction Inc., in Henderson, Colo., recently completed two tunnels vital to the construction of the Animas La Plata Reservoir in Durango, Colo. The tunnels, 370 feet and 130 feet in length, were completed utilizing a Robbins Motorized SBU. Unique to this project, the boring equipment was recovered mid-air, employing a hydraulic crane in a 15-foot diameter shaft, 118 feet deep.

The two rock tunnels mark the last phase of the project that began in 2002, and the final major milestone in 50 years of working to bring water to an arid region. EPC Construction of Glendale, Ariz., is the general contractor for the project.

Final filling of the reservoir has begun, and is expected to take 2 years, after which the system will be fully operational.

Chikyu1 Successful Riser-drilling in the Kumano Basin

Despite harsh atmospheric and ocean conditions, and complex geological characteristics of its drill site, the deep-sea drilling vessel CHIKYU conducted riser-drilling operations to successfully drill down to a depth of a mile beneath the seafloor.

New Technology to Support Deepwater Crustal Drilling
Scientists have engineered an ultra-deepwater drilling technology for use by drilling vessels in scientific research. Originally developed for shallow-water oil and gas exploration, the "riserless mud recovery" technology holds great promise for researchers striving to drill all the way through ocean crust into the Earth's mantle.

NGWA Certification Exams to Be Offered on Computer Only
Beginning Nov. 1, the National Ground Water Association will offer its voluntary certification program exams for water well contractors through computer testing centers only.

First Season of International Ice Core-drilling Project Completed
A research team has drilled an ice core of 5,767 feet in length on the Greenland inland ice within 110 days, and it is expected to contain data on climate history of about 38,000 years.

Satellites Unlock Secret to Northern India's Vanishing Water
Using NASA satellite data, scientists have found that ground water levels in northern India have been declining by as much as 1 foot per year over the past decade. Researchers concluded the loss is almost entirely due to human activity.

Ball State University Begins Large Geothermal Project
Ball State University, Muncie, Ind., has begun the drilling of the largest geothermal project in U.S. history. When completed, the system will heat and cool more than 40 buildings over 660 acres.

SYSTEM 1000 VACMASTERS System 1000 Air-vacuum Excavation System

The VACMASTERS SYSTEM 1000 Air-vacuum Excavation System offers drilling contractors and environmental consultants high performance, low cost and small size in an Air-Vacuum Excavation System. The SYSTEM 1000 uses high-pressure air, the technology most often recommended by the major oil companies, to quickly, efficiently and safely expose buried utilities in order to prevent damage during drilling operations. Dry spoils are available for backfill, or they may be deposited directly into a 55-gallon barrel for transport and disposal. The SYSTEM 1000 is available in trailer-, truck- or skid-mounted configurations.
