Ice Core Drilling in Greenland
Scientists from 14 nations are participating in the North Greenland Eemian Ice drilling project, or NEEM. When drilling ended for the 2009 summer season, samples from 1 mile down had been retrieved, dating back over 38,000 years.

Drilling Deeper Below Antarctica's Lake Vida
Antarctica's Lake Vida is a geologic curiosity. It is perpetually covered by more than 60 feet of ice, with brine below. Scientists plan to perform the first-ever drilling entirely through Lake Vida's thick ice cap, into the brine, and down into sediment below.

McLaughlinNew Steering Head for Auger Bores

The ON Target auger boring system from McLaughlin not only allows contractors to control horizontal on-grade (up and down) changes, but it also enables lateral (left to right) direction changes. The new system helps provide contractors with more control of the auger boring steering head, leading to better accuracy for difficult on-grade bores. The steering head is controlled by hydraulic actuated panels that open and close to keep the head on the intended path. A control station features a hydraulic power pack to control the movement of the steering head, and a built-in water level helps monitor grade throughout the bore. Two halogen lights in the control station indicate lateral steering head movements. The new ON Target auger boring system is designed for the installation of casings between 12 inches and 70 inches.
