Sonic Drill Helps Students Reveal Glacial Secrets
In the summer of 2009, Midwest Geo offered one of its workshops on glacial successions for more than 50 geologists from Canada and the United States. The course teaches the principles of sedimentary depositions, the effects of sedimentary weathering and the methods to describe those elements on boring logs. The workshop also allows the university's geological, engineering and environmental sciences students to identify the same geological units in different boreholes in the region. The drilling firm, Crater Lake Drilling from Red Deer, Alberta, working with personnel from Sonic Drilling Ltd. of Surrey, British Columbia, carefully sampled and provided
100-percent core recovery. First, the team drilled a pilot hole the day before the course to better understand the geology of the region. Next, for the instructional hole, the sonic rig drilled down 100 feet.

Pentair: New Sustainable Water Provider for the Minnesota Twins
The Twins and Pentair Water are partnering to spotlight the global issue of water by setting a new standard for water use in sports facilities. Pentair will donate and install a custom-designed rain water recycle system (RWRS) that will capture, conserve and reuse rain water at Target Field, the new home of the Minnesota Twins in April 2010.

Solar-powered Irrigation Improves Life in Rural sub-Saharan Africa
Solar-powered drip irrigation systems significantly enhance household incomes and nutritional intake of villagers in arid sub-Saharan Africa, according to a new Stanford University study. The two-year study found that solar-powered pumps

Drill Bits, Pressure Sensors and Now High Temperatures
The drill bit gradually burrows deeper into the earth. Meanwhile, dozens of sensors are busily taking pressure readings and evaluating porosity. Sensors are required to withstand high temperatures and pressures, as well as shocks and vibrations. Yet, on average, pressure sensors can only withstand

| temperatures of 176 degrees F to 257 degrees F - but at great depths, the temperature often is significantly higher. However,
researchers now have developed a pressure sensor system that continues
to function normally even at 482 degrees F.
