Lone Star Corporate College is accepting applications for its Oil & Gas Drilling/Floor-Hand program, which prepares students for entry into the workforce in eight weeks.

Classes will take place at LSC-University Park and will include both evening and day options. The evening session begins March 24 and runs through Sept. 9, with classes set for Monday – Thursday, 6 to 9 p.m. The daytime course begins June 17, with classes Monday – Thursday from 8 to 5 p.m. and runs eight weeks through Aug. 18.

“The demand for qualified, trained employees has never been greater,” says Michael Burns, LSCC director. “This training program will provide entry-level knowledge and skills needed for workers in the drilling and exploration sector of the oil and gas industry.”

According to the Greater Houston Partnership’s 2014 Guide to the Energy Capital of the World publication, in Texas, 43,000 new jobs were added in the oil and gas industry in 2012 and the industry continues to grow. A recent report by the American Petroleum Institute predicts that the oil and gas and petrochemical sectors will add 1.3 million new jobs between 2010 and 2030.

The LSCS Oil & Gas Drilling/Floor-Hand program includes Introduction to Oil and Gas, Introduction to Rig Maintenance, Basic Mechanical Skills, Drilling/Rig Floor Core Skills, IADC RIG PASS and IADC WellCAP Introduction courses. The cost to attend either night or day program is $2,844.00.

“The training received through this program has been developed in conjunction with a number of major oil and gas companies,” says Burns. “These specific courses will equip students with the fundamentals to step into this growing industry – based on input from the companies that could potentially end up hiring them.”
An oil and gas drilling floor-hand performs general duties of all types on an oil rig. The floor-hand also assists in rigging up, rigging down, and transporting of drilling rig and equipment, and helps conduct preventative maintenance on the rig.
