The recent price war in the $9 billion U.S. bottled water market is expected to get even nastier this year. PepsiCo and Coca-Cola own the top selling bottled water brands, while brands from Nestle combine to hold the largest overall share of the market. Soft drink sales are on the wane so PepsiCo and Coca-Cola both are intent on making hay in their water businesses. Prices have plummeted as the bottlers try to boost market share and analysts are voicing concerns that the market could end up as a commodity business. The soft drink giants also are eyeing the European market, where consumers drink twice as much bottled water as Americans do. But having success in that market could prove difficult for American companies. ND
