As part of an effort to clean up the San Gabriel Valley, Calif.'s ground water supply, the U.S. EPA is installing a system of pipes connecting seven wells to a soon-to-be completed treatment plant at Whittier Narrows. When built, the Whittier Narrows Groundwater Remediation Plant will clean up and stop the spread of ground water under Whittier Narrows that is currently 10 times contaminated than is acceptable, said Patricia Bowlin, remedial project manager, as reported in an article in theLA Times.

Just south of Legg Lakes, the ground water is contaminated by industrial solvents that leaked into the aquifer decades ago. The contamination has been spreading several hundred feet farther south every year. After the completion of the treatment system, the EPA hopes to begin reversing the damage by December.
