On the Job: Nuclear Test Site
October 1, 2007
This equipment at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Nevada Test Site is capable of augering soil down to a depth of 150 feet. Here it is suspended from a 150-ton crane. The rotary auger is driven by two separate motors suspended from the raised platform. It is used to start some vertical boreholes for underground nuclear tests.
