Upon its completion, the Devil’s Thumb Ranch & Lodge was the largest geothermal project in Colorado to date. The facility utilizes all three types of geothermal loop fields – vertical boreholes, horizontal trenches and pond – 120,000 square-feet combined. Doing the installation was Rocky Mountain Geo-Thermal Inc., Centennial, Colo. The owner of the Devil’s Thumb resort not only values saving money, but he also understands the importance of protecting our environment. Horizontal trench loops provide heating and cooling for all of the lodge’s cabins (each cabin is 1,000 sq. ft. to 2,200 sq. ft.).
A pond loop provides the heating, cooling and hot water for the 30,000-square-foot activity center. The pond loop also provides heat for the pool and Jacuzzi, as well as for snowmelt. The lodge uses a vertical bore field comprised of 160-foot to 300-foot vertical wells. The vertical bore field is used to heat and cool all 52 rooms in the 40,000-square-foot facility.
