The National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation recently awarded a total of $2,000 in Farvolden Award scholarships to four students for paper or poster presentations made at the 2010 NGWA Ground Water Summit and 2010 Ground Water Protection Council Spring Meeting that took place in Denver.

Given in honor of the late Dr. Robert Farvolden, former senior science counsel for the National Ground Water Association, the $500 scholarships are awarded based on the quality of the presentation, content (including contribution to ground water science, engineering, management or policy), and demonstrated insight on the chosen topic.

  The winners:
  • Rory Cowie, University of Colorado at Boulder, "Use of Isotopic and Geochemical Tracers to Identify Source Waters and Subsurface Residence Times Within Headwater Catchments in Boulder Creek Watershed, Colorado" (paper);
  • Kristin Mikkelson, Colorado School of Mines, "Preliminary Investigations Into the Impact on Metal and Cationic  Surface and Groundwater Fluxes Due to the Mountain Pine Beetle Epidemic: Summit County, Colorado" (poster);
  • Michelle Miro, University of Texas at Austin, "Rural Water Supply in Tamil, India: A Provider-Based Approach" (poster); 
  • Stephanie Wong, Baylor University, "Quantifying Groundwater Resources in Alluvial Aquifers Using GIS" (poster).
