S.S. Papadopulos & Associates Inc. will underwrite the National Ground Water Research and Educational Foundation’s (NGWREF) Robert Farvolden Awards in 2012 and 2013 – continuing its support of the awards presented to undergraduate and graduate students for outstanding poster and paper presentations made at the annual National Ground Water Association (NGWA) Ground Water Summit. Up to four award recipients each will receive $750.

The scholarships are named in honor of the late Robert Farvolden, a pioneer in the development of modern hydrogeology. During a 20-year period, Farvolden taught hundreds of young earth scientists at all academic levels. At the same time, he maintained an active international research effort on regional hydrogeology in more than a dozen countries, with much of the emphasis on the development and management of safe water supplies for populations in underdeveloped areas. After his academic retirement in 1992, Farvolden accepted the position of senior scientist for the NGWA.

In addition to underwriting the Farvolden Awards in 2012 and 2013, S.S. Papadopulos also will provide $500 each of those years to the NGWREF’s Len Assante Scholarship fund, which awards scholarships to high school graduate or full-time undergraduate students studying ground water-related fields who are enrolled in a four-year college program or two-year well drilling associate degree program.

S.S. Papadopulos & Associates was established in 1979 to provide professional consulting services for ground water issues. While ground water hydrology and hydrogeology are the cornerstone of the firm’s expertise, it has expanded to develop a recognized practice in contaminant studies, remediation, geochemistry and surface water hydrology.
