The Deep Foundations Institute Europe, a regional chapter of the Deep Foundations Institute (DFI), has published a new document that combines standard industry definitions of geotechnical terms from North America and Europe.

 

The new Glossary/Lexicon merges the DFI Glossary, which included definitions mainly used in North America, and DFI Europe’s Lexicon, which consists of terms translated into English from several European languages. CEN (European Committee for Standardization) standard terms are included in the Glossary/Lexicon.

 

Tony Butcher, a DFI Europe board member and chairman of the reviewing committee for the Glossary/Lexicon, said the goal is to maintain one source of equivalent foundations sector terminology for professionals throughout North America and Europe. Butcher adds that plans are in the works to expand the Glossary/Lexicon to other parts of the world.

 

Foundations professionals can review and suggest additions and changes to the Glossary/Lexicon through an online form at www.dfi-europe.org. Contributors are asked to cite sources of changes or new terminology, whether from an ASTM, a CEN Execution or Design Standard (EC7), a DIN Standard or the ICE SPERW, national standards or specification documents, or any other document.
