Boart Longyear Introduces New LX11 Minerals Rig

Boart Longyear's new LX11 does both reverse circulation and diamond core drilling.

Boart Longyear recently rolled out the new LX11 multipurpose rig for the mineral exploration sector.

“The multipurpose LX11 drilling rig is the culmination of many years of hands-on experience, advanced engineering and field testing,” said Justin Warren, Boart Longyear’s global product manager.

The track-mounted LX11, the company said in a statement, features improved safety mechanisms, a small footprint and low cost of ownership.

The LX11 adds a medium-sized entry to Boart Longyear’s line of multipurpose rigs, which already includes the LX6 and LX16. The new rig can perform reverse circulation and diamond core drilling, allowing drillers to use one rig for a range of ground conditions.

“The versatility of the LX11 allows drilling contractors the ability to supplement the roles of multiple rigs with the simplicity of one, saving on equipment costs,” Warren added.

The LX11 can hit depths of 4,750 feet using NQ rods via diamond drilling, and up to 1,065 feet using 4.5-inch rods using reverse circulation. The mast, at over 23 feet, and top drive head allow for 13-foot rods to be pulled under the head, increasing productivity. The LX11 can also be equipped with a rod handler.

Safety features include: a control panel place for ideal visibility, a remote control for driving the rig from a safe distance, and an interlocked safety cage to protect operators.

The LX11’s small footprint makes it ideal for hard to reach sites. It’s also designed to fit in a 40-foot-high cube container, making it economical to ship to remote locations.

Boart Longyear, based in Salt Lake City, touts itself as the world’s leading provider of drilling services and equipment, and performance tooling for the mining industry. The company has more than 9,000 employees worldwide, manufactures equipment in six global factories, and sells to customers in more than 100 countries.
