The Deep Foundations Institute named Bengt H. Fellenius the group’s 10^th John Mitchell Lecturer. Fellenius will speak at the 2014 DFI-EFFC International Conference on Deep Foundations & Piling.

Fellenius

Fellenius has an international reputation as a geotechnical consultant and professional engineer specializing in foundation studies. He served as a professor of civil engineering at University of Ottawa, Canada. His membership in DFI stretches back to the group’s charter and he was one of the DFI’s original trustees. He received the group’s distinguished service award in 1993, was Hal Hunt Lecturer in 1999 and Osterberg Lecturer in 2010.

He is a native of Sweden and a third-generation geotechnical civil engineer. He earned a master of applied science degree in 1962 and a doctorate of technology, emphasis on soil mechanics and foundation engineering, in 1972, both from Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Technology. He came to North America after achieving his doctorate, working at a contracting firm before opening his own consultancy. He taught at University of Ottawa for 20 years before leaving to focus on consulting.

Fellenius has written and published hundreds of technical documents, mostly on pilings and deep foundations.

The DFI established the John Mitchell Lecture series in 1991 at the fourth International Conference on Piling and Deep Foundations. The lecture series honors John Michael Mitchell for his contributions to the group’s international presence.
