The National Ground Water Association (NGWA) has given an Outstanding Groundwater Project Award to Essential Management Solutions LLC of Evergreen, Colo.

The award acknowledges the company for their excellence in restoring contaminated groundwater at the former Herington Army Airfield in Herington, Kan. The 2009-2013 project involved the remediation of trichloroethylene (TCE), which had affected overburden soil and three underlying bedrock units. The contaminant resulted in a dissolved plume that extended about six miles from the site.

Essential Management Solutions used an innovative continuous oxidant injection method that developed from another attempt at the approach at another site in 2007. The application method significantly accelerated the remediation of groundwater at the site and affected areas downgradient.

The award will be presented at the 2014 NGWA Groundwater Expo in Las Vegas, in December.
