Franklin Electric, GEFCO and Baroid IDP are sponsoring the Indiana Ground Water Association’s (IGWA) 2015 Spring Field Day and Mud School April 25. It will take place at Franklin Electric’s headquarters in Fort Wayne.

The continuing education event for water well drillers will focus on mud rotary drilling using a solids control unit. It will also feature new product demonstrations.

“Franklin Electric, the IGWA, GEFCO and Baroid are honored to co-host about 150 to 200 groundwater professionals from Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio,” says DeLancey Davis, vice president of Franklin Electric and president of North America Water Systems. “Training is mission-critical for all of our organizations and Franklin Electric is excited to showcase our engineering capabilities and new technologies that enhance system efficiency, installation and monitoring capabilities.”

Brock Yordy of GEFCO and Chad Yordy of Baroid IDP will lead the three-hour continuing education forum. They will cover all aspects of groundwater drilling to meet safety and environmental requirements.

Attendees will be exposed to a complete drilling process. It will begin with a discussion on drilling methods, a drilling fluids plan, and mud mixing and solids control. The goal of the planning is to teach drillers how to make drilling fluids planning a habit.

Drillers will start the rig and slowly drill the first 40 feet to show how the solids content of the mud increases with the rate of drilling. Drilling rates and efficiency will provide information on proper operating systems. The drill will reach a total depth of 100 feet as instructors cover best practices for rotation and mud pump speed. The course will finish up with an overview of proper hole abandonment to the state’s required properties and a question and answer session.

“The groundwater industry is largely self-taught,” says Brock Yordy. “This is one reason why GEFCO and Baroid IDP lead training sessions throughout the country.”
