With a goal to expand its service offerings, Trinity, Ala.-based GSE has purchased a new sonic drilling rig from Terra Sonic International.

GSE is a woman-owned engineering and environmental field services firm with experience providing engineering solutions for public- and private-sector clients under NAICS Codes 541330, 562910 and 541620. The family business has provided field services on assessment and remediation projects across the southeastern U.S. over the past 20 years.

"We are growing as a sonic drilling contractor and field services provider in the Southeast," says Bruce Cole, vice president for GSE.  "We recently hired Blake Cabit, general manager for our drilling services division. We purchased our first TSi 150CC in 2014 and we see growing demand for sonic drilling services with our customers. We selected Terra Sonic because we wanted a 'real' sonic drill rig capable of providing the types of services our customers demand."

The company has maintained a contract at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Ala., for more than eight years and has performed a substantial amount of sonic drilling, including the installation of hundreds of thermal treatment probes. In addition, their remedial construction group continues to perform source removal excavations as they work with national consultants to further assess and remediate the property.

GSE's new rig is a TSi 150CC compact crawler-mounted sonic drilling rig. The TSi 150CC uses the same unique sonic oscillator designed for the TSi 150T and 150C, with the added benefits of compactness and transportability.

Measuring less than 20 feet long, the TSi 150CC fits inside a standard 20-cubic-yard sea container and weighs 22,400 pounds. The rig is equipped with the proprietary TSi 150 series sonic oscillator that utilizes up to 150 horsepower to generate powerful resonant sonic energy in the drill string to a drilling depth of up to 1,000 feet, depending upon the lithology and casing design. It can drill from vertical to nearly horizontal and is driven via remote control with trekking speeds up to 3.5 miles per hour.

Terra Sonic International, based in Marietta, Ohio, is a leading maker and servicer of sonic drilling rigs and services. To learn more, visit www.terrasonicinternational.com.
